COVID-19 Research Event: The Race to Develop Vaccines & Treatments

May 20, 2020 @ 6:00 pm - 8:30 pm

(America/Toronto)    $10.00 – $25.00

The world has been greatly impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic and many are waiting in much anticipation for a vaccine and treatments. Many researchers are working tirelessly on COVID-19 research efforts and we have seen many institutions receive funding to support research studies. Join us for an evening of discussion on the important research efforts and highlight some Canadian researchers working behind the scenes on vaccines, treatments and we will also talk about how people can find out and get involved in these research efforts.

We are honored to have the following speakers:

Dr. Chil-Yong Kang, PhD, DSc, FRSC, Professor of Virology in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology, Western’s Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry:      Dr. Kang and his team are widely lauded for creating an HIV vaccine and have been working on a vaccine for MERS (Middle East Respiratory Syndrome) – which is highly related to COVID-19.  His research team is working round-the-clock on a vaccine for SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19.  Dr Kang will discuss the vaccine process and update us on the progress of his vaccine.

Aude Willm, MSc, Clinical Research Diploma, Universite of Strasbourg, France.  Aude and her colleagues at Laurent Pharmaceuticals rapidly stepped up to the plate to join the fight against COVID-19.  She will discuss the challenges and logistics of getting this trial up and running quickly.

Jean-Marie Houle, PhD Pharm, Vice PResident, Clinical Development, Laurent Pharmaceuticals.  Jean-Marie is very knowledgeable about clinical development and will discuss the mechanism of action of their study drug and why it may be helpful as a treatment for COVID-19.  Together with Aude, the attendee will gain deep understanding of getting a study up and running for COVID-19.

Andre Valleteau, HBSc, Andre Valleteau is a Clinical Research Coordinator at LMC Manna Research concentrating on metabolic disorder research. He holds a HBSc in Pathology from Queen’s University and has been an ACRP member since 2019. His journey is unique; having recovered from COVID-19, Valleteau is a researcher-turned-patient. He is actively participating in COVID-19 trials and will be sharing his COVID-19 journey to raise awareness around the importance of clinical research participation in order to beat COVID-19.

Nazneen Qureshi, HBSc,  Nazneen Qureshi is the Director of Patient Engagement Innovation at LMC Manna Research. In this role, she manages study start-up activities, focusing on recruitment and retention strategies. Her objective is to increase the understanding of patient perceptions to improve clinical research processes such as study design, experience, and motivation to participate. Qureshi is the recipient of the SCRS 2017 Site Patient Recruitment Innovation Achievement Award. She holds an HBSc in neuroscience and psychology from the University of Toronto and is completing her MBA at Lazaridis School of Business & Economics. Nazneen will discuss the importance of patient recruitment and patient engagement for COVID-19 research studies and she will talk about what LMC Manna Research is doing to help people get involved to support COVID-19 research efforts.
