Janice E. Parente, PhD

For over 30 years, Janice has advocated for the rights and welfare of human research participants.

In 1992, Janice founded two Canadian companies: ethica CRO – a full-service contract research organization, and Veritas IRB – a private research ethics board. Janice presided over these companies for the ensuing years instilling in them her commitment to the protection of human research participants and establishing her credentials as a respected business leader and entrepreneur.

ethica CRO and Veritas IRB were the first Canadian entities to earn full accreditation of their Human Research Protection Programs (HRPPs). ethica CRO was the first contract research organization accredited in the world, carving a path for other research enterprises to follow.

Janice is currently the President and CEO of two not-for-profit organizations that she founded in 2018: Human Research Standards Organization (HRSO), and Human Research Accreditation Canada (HRA Canada). HRSO is a standards development organization that develops standards pertaining to the conduct and oversight of human research. HRA Canada accredits human research according to the standards developed by HRSO.

Janice has a degree in biochemistry (BScHons) from McMaster University and a PhD in medicine (molecular pharmacology) from the University of Alberta.
